Mt Maunganui

Mount Maunganui in the Bay of Plenty, or ‘The Mount’ as it is more commonly known, is one of New Zealand’s favourite holiday destinations.

Mount Maunganui is a peninsula which boasts a sweeping 16 kilometres of surf beach on its Pacific Ocean side and the idyllic Tauranga Harbour inland. Mount Maunganui itself is a sacred mountain and ancient volcano which stands proudly at the tip of the peninsula.

Take a morning walk along the track that runs around the base of the mountain. You’ll see boats and ships cruising through the harbour entrance, waves crashing against ancient volcanic rock, birdlife, offshore islands and more on the easy 45- minute stroll. There are plenty of seats to stop and enjoy the views.

If you’re fairly fit, nothing can top the stunning 360-degree views that await you at the summit of the Mount. Take a cool drink or a picnic, and make sure you allow time to enjoy the views along the surf coast, over the Tauranga Port and harbour, out to the Kaimai mountain ranges, and over the city and sea.

At the very foot of Mount Maunganui is the popular Mount Hot Saltwater Pools – with adult pools, tepid pools, a children’s pool and even private pools. After a swim, you might like to indulge in a waffle-cone ice cream – yum!

After your walk or swim, indulge in a delicious waffle-cone ice-cream as you enjoy the beach views, re-energize with an espresso coffee, or tuck into a hearty brunch from one of the many beachfront cafes.

The beach directly at the foot of Mount Maunganui is affectionately known as ‘the main’. This stretch of white sand and blue water is a people-magnet during summer months. This beach (along with others along the Mount Maunganui surf coast) is patrolled by lifeguards during warmer seasons. Beach Volleyball tournaments, triathlons, surf lifesaving competitions and other major sporting events draw crowds in summer months. The harbour-side bay is called Pilot Bay, an awesome cove, lined with large Norfolk Pine trees, for those who prefer calmer water. These two popular spots are less than 5 minutes drive from Cutterscove - your Mount Maunganui apartment accommodation.

Between the calm harbour waters and miles of popular surf beaches is Mount Maunganui’s vibrant shopping and cafe and restaurant centre.
