The main beach is one of the most popular surfing locations, but there are a series of great breaks right along the Bay of Plenty coast.
The break directly out front of Cutterscove is referred by local as 'Tay Street'. During warmer months, daily surf lessons are on offer at 'the main' and Tay Street by the NZ Surf School and other professional instructors.
If you have or can hire a boat, the short trip to Matakana Island (across the harbour entrance from Mount Maunganui) is well worth it. This long and exposed shoreline tends to produce larger and more hollow surf than Mount Maunganui beaches. |
